SEVEN STAR WOMEN'S KUNG FU

History

Seven Star Women's Kung Fu was founded in 1981 by Anne Moon. Her student Michelle McVadon, a fifth-degree black belt, has been head instructor since 1995. Our school represents four generations of women teaching in the martial arts.

We practice the Gaylord Method of Chu'an Fa Kung Fu in the Kajukenbo system. Kajukenbo was developed in Hawaii in the late 1940s.

The front of the schoolTraining

Kajukenbo is an eclectic martial art derived from aspects of karate, judo, jujitsu, kenpo and kung fu. We therefore practice both the straight line force of karate kicks and punches and the circular defense and footwork of kung fu. In addition, rolling, falling, nerve attacks and joint locks are taught. We practice not only traditional sparring and forms, but also self-defense against both physical and verbal assaults.

The school is sensitive to issues of fear, violence and power that women may face when they train in the martial arts. Teachers address these issues as they arise. Additionally, a time for questions and feedback is provided at the end of class when students can share their feelings, ideas and concerns about training. An open atmosphere encourages mutual respect among students and teachers. The art is taught with an awareness that self-confidence and self-respect are as important as fighting skills.

School structure

Seven Star Women's Kung Fu was founded as a non-profit feminist martial arts school. It is more affordable and less hierarchical than many traditional martial arts schools. We offer free childcare, and partial scholarships are available for those who qualify.

The school is run by a steering committee composed of student and teacher representatives. School meetings are held monthly to discuss policy and maximize student input.

Committees are formed as needed to carry out such duties as fundraising, publicity, organizing child care, and care of the training space. The continued vitality of the school depends upon student participation.
